Radiological Security as Important Interdisciplinary puzzle for International Relations and Nonproliferation regime

Abstract

This article busts the myth that radiological security is an exclusively technical field. It proves proves its relevance and the importance for international relations and policy experts. The author who is a nonproliferation expert with the background in international relations reinforces the interdisciplinary foundation of the radiological security field. Realizing that the this myth is still so strong in policy-oriented field, she calls for incorporating education in radiological security to policy and international relations curricular. This research will mostly focus on the importance of knowledge of radiological security for policy and diplomacyoriented people as well as explain the connection to the Nonproliferation regime and UNSCR 1540 implementation. Experts in international relations play a crucial role in forming policy and crafting agreements, so addressing radiological security at a global level needs diplomacy. International cooperation plays a crucial role in all fields to develop regulations to control the use, transport and disposal of radioactive materials, and ensure their safety and security. In addition to technical knowledge, these measures involve expertise in law, policy and regulations. As radiological materials are used worldwide in many fields, the importance of coordination between different groups of experts is one of the crucial steps in preventing radiological accidents. The article will conclude with an example of successful diplomacy efforts and technical cooperation between improbable actors in securing radioactive sources in the Republic of Moldova.
