Abstract
It is the purpose of my discussion to relate the current role of Nuclear Materials Management in implementing and administering the nuclear safety program at the Battelle Columbus Laboratories. Hopefully my remarks will not lose sight of the primary objective of a nuclear materials management program, that is, the effective and accurate accounting and control of special nuclear material. It is my intent to demonstrate the compatibility and workability of a nuclear safety program and nuclear materials management. Perhaps it would be appropriate at the outset to spend a few moments des- cribing the \"how and why\" of Battelle Memorial Institute. Battelle Memorial Institute is a \"testamentary trust\" established in accordance with Ohio laws, through the will of Ohio industrialist, Gordon Battelle. Since 1925 the will has been interpreted and implemented by the Trustees. Battelle's purpose today may be broadly stated as a not-for-profit research organization. \"To utilize science for the benefit of mankind\". To obtain maximum benefit from the funds of the original endowment in carrying out the objectives, the principal work of the Institute has developed into what is commonly identified as contract research. Research at Battelle today encompasses virtually all facets of science and its application. The Columbus Laboratories comprise the original research center which has become an international organization. In addition to the Columbus Laboratories, the Battelle complex includes the Pacific Northwest Laboratories, and two European Labs, the Geneva and Frankfurt Laboratories.
