Abstract
Our next speaker is a native from Rochester, New York. He was graduated in economics from the University of Rochester in 1941. He has a Master's degree with distinction from Harvard Graduate School of Business and is a graduate of the National War College. He retired from the Army after thirty years of service focused on international affairs and strategic defense planning. During this time he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star. He has been a senior staff member of the National Security Council staff since 1969 and was Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of National Security Council Planning when he was appointed to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in January 1975. We welcome Commissioner Richard Kennedy. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in this first session of your annual meeting. The subject which brings us here today is one of growing concern. Industry, the Federal Government, and the general public all are evidencing increased interest in the adequacy of safeguards. I would like to take a few minutes this morning to review the work which we at the NRC have done over the past two years and to say something about what we see for the future.
