Abstract
The paper describes briefly the experience gained so far with International Safeguards in nuclear facilities of the Federal Republic of Germany. After describing the legal framework that has been established and the various steps which had to be taken by the state and facility operators for the smooth introduction and implementation of IAEA and Euratom safeguards, the paper discusses some of the practical consequences for facility operators and comments on some problems which have been identified during the experience with inspections in the last three years. It illustrates that a high degree of cooperation and assistance from the operator are some of the very important prerequisites for successful implementation of safeguards in facilities. Finally an outlook is given on the implications that arise from current experience for the further development of safeguards measures.
