Abstract
Since the mid 1970's, numerous sophisticated techniques have been developed to examine the effectiveness of physical security systems. Considering the inherent u n c e r t a i n t i e s involved in assessing security system performance, simplified versions of these techniques are u s e f u l . Such simple techniques have the advantages of: ease of use, minimal computer h a r d w a r e / s o f t w a r e requirements, and low cost. This paper summarizes such simple techniques which we have developed based on detailed analyses of over 50 nuclear facilities using the original sophisticated techniques. Basically, the simple techniques described address the following: What to protect, how to best protect it.
