Abstract
Canberra has recently finished the development of a new low level gamma assay system to accurately detect and quantify fission products and transuranic materials in 118 liter drums. The system combines several features from different waste assay systems as well as some new correction algorithms to provide the most sensitive and accurate assay possible. The system has a minimum detection level of 2 mg for Pu-239 and 1 mg of U-235 with the source located in the center of a 0.3 g/cc drum and an assay time of 30 minutes. Some of the features of the system include transmission correction of the gamma assay data, MGA analysis to determine the plutonium and uranium isotopics, and Canberra's new NUCS non uniformity correction analysis software.
