Abstract
August 2, 1946, is a memorable day in the Atomic Energy Program. On that day, nearly 19 years ago, the first formal shipment of byproduct radioisotopes was made from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This was a small irradiated unit containing carbon 14. It was for the Bernard Cancer Hospital at St. Louis, for use in cancer research. The first part of the journey was by helicopter to McGee-Tyson Airport at Knoxville, Tennessee. There, the shipment was placed aboard a regularly scheduled American Airlines' flight headed for St. Louis.
