Abstract
In a world of rising concern over radioactive materials shipments, the United States Department of Energy's (DOE) transportation management program has a valuable resource in TRANSCOM, a Transportation Tracking and Communication System. TRANSCOM provides near real-time tracking of and direct communication with highvisibility DOE shipments. Through the TRANSCOM Control Center (TCC), these shipments can be monitored around the clock and information disseminated to authorized State and local governments as well as DOE officials, shippers, and receivers. Consequently, the TCC aids DOE in maintaining its excellent safety record of transporting radioactive materials for over 40 years.
