Abstract
This paper introduces a new (patent pending) approach to the detection of intruders for temporary and permanent, indoor and outdoor, perimeter security. This Synergistic Radar technology detects intruders moving near an open transmission line by measuring the disturbance of commercial Frequency Modulated (FM) radio signals received on an open transmission line relative to a reference antenna. Through the synergistic simultaneous use of signals from two stations this passive Radio Frequency (RF) sensor achieves all of the benefits of an active sensor using frequency diversity without the need for radio regulatory licencing. The microprocessor based sensor automatically selects the FM radio stations to be used and is capable of switching to an alternate station in the case of station failure. By utilizing sophisticated integrated circuits developed for the mass commercial FM radio market, Instantel is able to produce a low cost sensor product for the commercial/ industrial security market that delivers superior performance to existing products. It is intended that the Sensing Cable can be suspended above ground, laid on the ground surface or buried in the ground to address both overt and covert sensor requirements. This product is ideal for the temporary or permanent protection of nuclear waste and the security considerations during safety related emergencies, demonstrations and construction.
