Abstract
The effectiveness of the intrusion detection component of a. physical protection system depends vitally upon proper installation and maintenance as well as initial sensor selection. The recent INMM Workshop on Physical Protection provided considerable insight into emerging trends in these areas. This workshop was attended by technical security personnel from operating plants, R&D Labs, and Government agencies. These persons corporately held a wide cross-section of operating experience with commercially available intrusion detection sensors. This operating experience is of the most practical variety, from the end users themselves, and it is obtained from a wide variety of field conditions. In this paper, various Intrusion Detectors are categorized according to their technological type, and the related operating experience is summarized. Additional discussion is provided on maintenance procedures and testing procedures.
