Abstract
Since the start of the construction of the U.S. Department of Energy Waste Isolation Plant near Carlsbad, New Mexico, in 1981, the project has overcome a non-stop flow of institutional issues, budget short falls, new regulations, law suite, congressional legislation and programme redirection. We now anticipate the first transuranic (TRU) waste will be shipped to the WIPP in May 1996.
