Abstract
Protecting persons and property from injury or damage from radiation or radioactive contamination where radioactive materials are handled or transported involves both radiation safety and nuclear safety. Radiation safety deals with the control of external and internal exposure of people to radiation and radioactive contamination. Nuclear safety or the control of accidental criticality refers to the limiting of amounts, sizes and shapes of fissile material and physical or administrative controls placed on that material to assure that an accidental chain reaction does not occur. Today, I will discuss the present status of regulations applicable to the transportation of radioactive materials with particular emphasis on nuclear safety in the transportation of fissile materials.
