Abstract
Many definitions of Material Unaccounted For (MUF) are available from such sources as the ERDA Manual, Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 70 and the Conceptual Design for Safeguards. Even though these differences in definition have lent themselves to varying interpretations concerning the exact computational form of MUF, this has posed no difficulty because each definition was clearly understood by those responsible for determining MUF. After introduction of the concept of limit of error for the MUF (LEMUF), the definition of the quantity, MUF, became crucial to the computational method of arriving at its limit of error.
