Abstract
Once again it is indeed a distinct pleasure to have this opportunity to address the members of the Institute and review with you the current status of the various transport regulations affecting the shipment of nuclear material. Before discussing the current status of the regulations, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Bureau of Explosives to you and explain the role that the Bureau has had in the development of safe and economically sound regulations governing the packaging and shipment of radioactive material. Although most of you are familiar with the Bureau of Explosives, for the benefit of those who might not know us, I have brought along with me several copies of a circular entitled \"A Short History of the Bureau of Explosives\" I/ which you are welcome to take. The Bureau of Explosives is a. part of the Association of American Railroads, and its personnel consists of a Director and Chief Inspector, a Technical Group, and a Tariff Publishing Section, all at our New York City Headquarters; a Chief Chemist, an Assistant Chief Chemist, and a Laboratory Assistant, at our Chemical Laboratory in Edison, New Jersey; and an Inspection Force of twenty-four District Inspectors located in various parts of the United States and Canada.
