Abstract
The physical protection program in the FR Germany covers a number of activities. It involves among others, introduction of back-fitting measures in existing nuclear facilities, preparation of regulations and R+E work in the area of physical protection. Various analyses and recommen- dations (for example /1/) at the international and national level have been taken into consideration in developing the regulations for physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities. A continuous evaluation program has been fore- seen at the governmental level so that these measures can be adapted or strengthened depending on the prevailing con- ditions. The regulations are rigorously implemented in existing facilities. An extensive back-fitting program ensures that the protection measures are updated according to these regulations. All the new facilities to be built have to incorporate in their physical protection systems, the recommendations of the updated regulations. In the present paper the main emphasis has been laid on the R+D work on different aspects of physical protection of nuclear materials and facilities.
