REPROCESSING AND RECYCLING OF LOW LEVEL CONTAMINATED SCRAP COMING FROM DECOMMISSIONING AND BACK FITTING

Abstract
At Siempelkamp foundry, FR Germany, a process was developed for recycling of low level contaminated metallic scrap from nuclear plants. The melting process was developed in cooperation with the German authorities. After several tests a license was given for melting under surveillance conditions. The maximum allowed activity to be handled is 74 Bq/g. During the melting process the furnace is completely closed by a filter system also while charging by a special device, so that in the space above the melt there is allways low pressure. Possibly got free activity during melting is lead to the filter system. Special investigations have been made on the behaviour of radionuclides like Co, Cs, Ce, Ag, Eu, Zn during melting. A partial decontamination effect could be demonstrated.
