Abstract
In view of the increasing requirement by both Euratom and IAEA Safeguards Inspectorates to take full advantage of the use of optical surveillance techniques, one would expect the task of reviewing the optical surveillance data to become an ever greater burden on inspector resources in the future. Techniques are under development and are becoming available on the market which have the potential to reduce the reviewing requirements by minimising the quantity of data to be assessed. The ESARDA C/S Working Group recently held a one day 'special topic1 meeting to discuss the merits and status of the potential surveillance • data technologies. The proposal to restrict a Working Group meeting to a single topic was somewhat experimental since it is not the normal practice for the Group. In retrospect, the idea can be judged to have been a great success because ten relevant papers were offered and presented. Unfortunately, ten papers were too many to discuss adequately in one day. Clearly we had chosen a topical subject. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief report of that meeting.
