Abstract
The composite error associated with the application of nondestructive assay to special nuclear materials accountability is separated into three distinct components. The components are considered in terms of hierarchy of contributing factors. Examining the hierarchy, methods are generalized for the reduction of the component errors through instrument design features and the implementation of appropriate assay control procedures. The use of auxiliary measurements is discussed as a means to further reduce and evaluate the contribution of potential error sources to the composite NDA error.
