Abstract
The paper discusses the basic philosophy of protection of special nuclear materials within the United Kingdom, with particular reference to British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, and indicates how structure and history of the civil nuclear industry in the UK has influenced these requirements. The UK civil nuclear industry, with the exception of the reactor construction sector, has been Government-owned since its inception. This has contributed to a different national approach to physical security rules and requirements, such that a formal and detailed regulatory system of physical security rules has not been considered necessary in the UK.
