Abstract
This paper provides an overview of Nigeria’s bilateral collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of Radiological Security, focusing on efforts to enhance the security of radioactive materials and prevent their illicit use. It explores the key areas of cooperation, including the secure transportation, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials, as well as the development of regulatory frameworks to strengthen national security. The paper highlights specific programs and initiatives that have been implemented under this partnership such as training, capacity building, and the installation of advanced monitoring and detection technologies. Additionally, it examines the broader geopolitical and security context that has shaped this collaboration, emphasizing the role of international cooperation in addressing the global threat of nuclear terrorism.
