Abstract
The Department of Energy's (DOE) mission continues to experience rigorous transformation resulting from significant changes throughout the world. One issue evolving from this mission change is the stewardship responsibility for large quantities of materials of interest from safety and security and environmental standpoints and their disposition paths. DOE complex-wide efforts are focussed on the decontamination and decommissioning, storage, and ultimate disposition of nuclear and non-nuclear materials. In early June 1994, The Secretary requested a Department- wide baseline inventory of all DOEmanaged materials to provide a better understanding of the scope and magnitude of the Department's material management responsibilities. The Baseline Material Inventory Project Team was established to compile the necessary date, construct an inventory of materials for which the Department is responsible, and develop a report and briefing for the Secretary by the end of December 1995. As a member of the Baseline Material Inventory project Team, a representative of the Office of Safeguards and Security (OSS) provided support in the collection of data and assisted in drafting the final report to the Secretary. This paper will discuss OSS' efforts to identify, collect, and categorize data in addition to sitespecific issues and possible future initiatives within the Department of Energy resulting from this exercise.
