Abstract
My task this morning is to present a perspective on the future of nuclear generated electrical power in this country, from the viewpoint of the electric utility industry. Certainly, today's picture is not encouraging. There have been no new nuclear plant orders in the past ten years. A number of plants planned or under construction have been cancelled, and others have been plagued by construction delays, licensing difficulties, and resultant cost overruns. The accidents at Three Mile Island and, more recently, at Chernobyl, have aggravated public uneasiness about nuclear plant safety.
