Abstract
I appreciate your invitation to meet with the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management. The list of speakers and panelists provides a strong indication of the growing interest in safeguarding our nuclear industry. The INMM organization has, for years, tried to instill in people the importance of proper nuclear security. It must be of some gratification that the matters you raised are finally receiving detailed attention in the public and government arena. Your program Chairman, Dr. Keepin, suggested that I tell you something about the NRC's mandate in the field of safeguards and share with you our thoughts on other newly emerging policy considerations. In following this general approach, I will touch on the status of some of the current issues facing the nuclear community and the regulatory staff in particular. Finally, I will not resist the temptation to do some prophesying.
