Abstract
Specific requirements for the control and accountability of special nuclear materials for AEC licensed processing facilities are stipulated in Part 70 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This paper addresses the role of nondestructive assay in meeting those requirements. The discussion is based on considering issued and proposed Regulatory Guides related to nondestructive assay. The content, scope, and philosophy embodied in those guides are discussed, and comments solicited. Nondestructive assay presents a unique opportunity to further improve special nuclear materials control and accounting in licensed processing facilities. The unique capabilities of NDA are examined in the context of prompt, localized accounting.
