Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to inform the members of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) of the effort involved and the constraints imposed in preparing a standard. Described are the structure of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the mechanics of writing a standard, the roles of the subcommittee members, and the insights and experiences of the task force on the Volume Calibration Techniques for Nuclear Materials Control. These experiences were extended by interviewing the chairman of other ANSI subcommittees. Results of this survey are quantified and evaluated. The information presented will benefit those members of the Institute called upon to review completed standards as well as prospective members of a standards subcommittee.
