Abstract
This paper takes a look at the data security issues and aspects of Local Area Networks (LANs). An overview of LAN concepts is presented, highlighting the differences between networked and stand-alone PC usage from an access control perspective. The logical access control system of Advanced NetWare is evaluated in detail and results of attempts to compromise an Advanced NetWare LAN are summarized. The local area network installed at Martin Marietta's corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland is examined as a case study. The paper concludes with a comparison of the security aspects between stand-alone PCs and the LAN, as implemented in the Martin Marietta example.
