Abstract
A single act of terrorism aimed at the nuclear industry could have disastrous effects on not only the plant or operator concerned but also for the industry as a whole. It will also have grave consequences for the Public Perception and Public Acceptance of the industry in general. Terrorism and the Terrorist Threat have been a constant threat to European Security for over 30 years. This paper explains some of the methods used by British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) in combating the terrorist threat and also living with the threat on an almost daily basis. The emphasis of the paper is to demonstrate not only how terrorist activity, or the threat from it can disrupt business operations, but also to demonstrate how good Physical Protection systems and communication systems throughout the organisation and workforce are vital in combating any terrorist activity aimed at the civil nuclear industry.
