Abstract

The Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) is established by the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Act 19 of 1995. The NNRA is empowered to develop regulations, provide guidance as well as consult stakeholders and interested parties as part of its regulatory activities. The NNRA has an approved methodology for developing regulations as part of its integrated management system. A document based on this procedure has been produced in the last quarter of 2023 with the assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as draft Nigerian Regulations on Transport Security of Radioactive Material. Between 2019 and 2023, the US DOE provided different training assistance on Transport Security of Radioactive Sources to the NNRA and Nigerian Stakeholders through the Office of Radiological Security (ORS). This presentation will discuss the process of developing regulations on Transport Security of radioactive material, lessons learnt as well as contribution of IAEA and the US DOE Office of Radiological Security (ORS)
