Abstract
In February 1997, the Department of Energy (DOE) Intemational Safeguards Division sponsored an Institute of Nuclear Materials Management workshop on Intemational Inspection of Excess Material. One of the sessions in that workshop was de'vOted to lessons leamed in the implementation of IAEA safeguards on DOE excess fissile materials. Shared experience gained from application of IAEA safeguards at the Y-12 Plant, Hanford Site, Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site, Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and the High Flux Isotope Reactor were discussed. These experiences continue to play an important role in the safeguards tutorials that the Intemational Safeguards Division conducts at sites preparing for the application of IAEA. This paper will discuss common lessons leamed in the application of IAEA safeguards to excess fissile material.
