Abstract
The Joint Research Center of the Commision of the European Communities is providing a technical support to the EURATOM Safeguards Directorate since more than two decades. During the last few years there has been an evolution in the technical issues to be adressed in order to respond to the new challenges of nuclear safeguards in European Community countries. The paper will present the highlights of achievements in the areas of support for NDA, surveillance, sealing/identification techniques and material accountancy information systems, including the present training programme of inspectors. For each of the above areas a short analysis will be made on the future trends in the technical support activities and on the need to maintain appropriate R/D activities to satisfy future request of technical support.
