Abstract
The Joint Programme on the Technical Development and Further Improvement of IAEA Safeguards between the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and the IAEA was initiated in autumn 1978. The aim of the Support Programme is to assist the Agency on a long-term basis in the elaboration of effective and practicable safeguards. The tasks to be executed in a conserted effort of public and private institutions in the Federal Republic of Germany cover a broad spectrum of safeguards R&D problems. The Programme comprises the development of safeguards system designs and safeguards approaches for advanced nuclear facilities presently being under construction or design like pebble fuel high temperatur reactor, fast breeder reactor and a medium size reprocessing plant. The program takes up problems related to safeguards data collection, treatment and evaluation. Moreover, development and test of a multitude of NBA and DA measurement instruments and methods as well as of containment and surveillance techniques make up an important part of the Support Programme. Examples of safeguards instruments developed under the Support Programme which are currently under field testing at the IAEA will be presented.
