JNF Activities for Public Acceptance of Nuclear Energy Feeling Easy Coming out of Actual Reality

Abstract
Japan Nuclear Fuel Co. Ltd. (JNF), initiated voluntary visitor service as early as 1986, to counter the anti-nuclear movements triggered by the Chelnobyri Accident. JNF has been annually accepting about 5000 visitors for the sake of public acceptance of nuclear energy. This also supports the activities of governments, utility companies, and nuclear industries at large. JNF is now regarded as a typical nuclear PA showcase because of visitors’ physical access to nuclear fuels. This “Actual Reality” is worth millions of words. JNF PA is characterized by 3 symbolic “F”s. “Focus” stands for tailored attendance to what visitors want, “Friendly” for amenable presentations without use of specialist language, and “First Hand” for visitors to get in actual touch with uranium. According to the result of our survey getting out of local visitors, 60% of them come with fear in nuclear energy, but 75% feel easy with it after grand tour through our plant with our guide. We now address ourselves more to younger generations and support PA activities for newly-planned sites of nuclear power generation.
