Interaction of Safeguards Instrumentation used in Large Plutonium Stores

The large Plutonium stores that are being commissioned within the European Community are considered in terms of a generic Pu store design and Inspectorate experience in applying Safeguards to these particular locations. The different safeguards measures used are reviewed and the improvements to the basic approach scheme are discussed. The difficulties of a common approach to the different designs is discussed and the aptness of each measure employed elaborated. The employment of complimentary Non Destructive Assay and Containment and Surveillance measures is emphasised to avoid unnecessary reverification of nuclear material in these new stores.
