Abstract

As new missions and ramp up at the country’s nuclear security sites and space in facilities becomes limited, footprint reduction has become a critical mission. Materials being staged represent a cost to DOE in terms of both financial expense and the opportunities lost to perform work in facilities that cannot accept additional nuclear materials. Counterbalancing these costs is the need to house materials that represent examples of historically relevant techniques and technologies no longer in use. A National Nuclear Security Archive (NNMA) has been established to catalogue, sample, and store selected aliquots for potential future use. As part of their footprint reduction mission, NNSA’s Office of Nuclear Materials Integration is supporting identification and basic characterization of such items found during cleanout and dispositioning of nuclear facilities.
