Abstract
With the national inspection scheduled in 1997, Korea has prepared to carry out the efficient safeguards inspection on nuclear facilities. The national inspection on the CANDU power stations is considered to be very important since it requires many PDIs(Person Day Inspection). IAEA inspectors count items of the irradiated CANDU fuel bundles in the storage pool by using either the underwater camera system or the underwater gamma scanning system. In order to implement the national inspection efficiently on the CANDU power stations, a new guiding tool with the reliable stability was developed to have a dual function. This tool was designed to guide and support the underwater camera system and also serve the guiding and moving tool as parts of the underwater gamma scanning system for the item counting of the bundles in the stacked trays of storage bay. The detection part which consists of a CdTe probe and the tungsten shield was designed to measure gamma rays emitted from a specific bundle. Experimental results showed that this system is suitable to verify the bundles in the storage pool. It is anticipated that this system will be efficiently used in the national inspection.
