Abstract
A study of alternative design concepts for portal detection of special nuclear material resulted in design changes in the detector, signal processing, and alarm logic components that improved the detection sensitivity for shielded nuclear material and made the system less false-alarm prone. The resulting performance complies with the stringent false-alarm criteria specified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
