Abstract

Nuclear energy plays an increasingly important role as a clean source of energy not only in India, but also in most of the countries around the globe. However, there are several security challenges associated with nuclear facility and materials. Understanding of nuclear security in terms of technical, policy, and regulatory aspects is very important for achieving and maintaining globally a high level of safety and security at nuclear facilities. Human, technical and financial resources are necessary to ensure effective nuclear security. Along with education, comprehensive training programmes on nuclear security can strengthen nuclear security capabilities. India has contributed significantly in nuclear security education and training to meet the requirements of its expanding nuclear program. This paper describes the role of Indian Universities to establish and sustain nuclear security education and training program as well as to evaluate the future challenges. In India, Amity University Uttar Pradesh is the only university who is offering a bachelor’s degree (B.Tech) in nuclear science and technology. It has also taken lead in promoting nuclear security program among Indian universities and various events on nuclear security are being organized in collaboration with various national and international organizations. Faculty members and students of Amity Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology are contributing towards nuclear security under INMM student chapter, established since 2015.
