IMPLEMENTATION OF IT-BASED APPLICATIONS IN THE SAFEGUARDS FIELD

For many years the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, SKI, has used computers as a tool within nuclear material control and accountancy. Over the last five years a lot of effort has been put into projects related to the increasing possibilities of fast and reliable data transfer over large distances. The paper discusses related administrative and technical issues and presents experience gained in tasks of the Swedish Support Program to IAEA Safeguards and during the alternative Safeguards trials carried out by SKI. The following topics will be presented: 1. Main Safeguards purposes and data transfer. 2. Administrative systems and requirements. 3. Technical possibilities and experiences. 4. The cost aspect.
