Abstract
IAEA inspections are an essential part of the international safeguards system. Past trends in safeguards and their impact on inspection activities are described. Such trends are, inter alia, the development of safeguards technology, of new approaches, of a highly computerized system and of safeguards criteria. Future tasks in international safeguards are considered, especially from the point of view of inspectors and their activities in the field and at headquarters.
