Abstract
A calorimeter has been built for the assay of plutonium contained in 4 litre packages of waste/ scrap residues. The calorimeter is of the twin isothermal design and is basically similar to other isothermally jacketed calorimeters in use at Rocky Flats and elsewhere. Design modifications include improved bath control, the use of aluminum sensors instead of copper and a simplified readout technique. Experimentally, the 4 litre calorimeter will detect less than 1 gram of plutonium containing 6% 21*0Pu in a matrix of insulation and has an operating range exceeding 1 kilogram.
