Abstract
Until recently, selecting a security system for medium and large proprietary facilities such as nuclear storage and handling installations has been a matter of grouping a number of unrelated systems from several vendors in order to accomplish a minimum-cost design that covers all of the required functions. Customized systems have been available only to the very high end of the security spectrum owing to their high cost and very long lead times. With the appearance on the market of low- cost personal computers with capabilities superior to large mainframe computers of the past, the goal of designing the ultimate in a flexible yet cost effective system has been brought one step closer to reality. This paper will examine some of the basic requirements for small to medium sized industrial / nuclear sites, and will describe Senstar Corporation's approach to meeting these requirements using personal computer technology.
