Abstract
A variety of practical training exercises have been prepared as part of an effort to develop the training program for IAEA safeguards inspectors. The two exercise sequences described in this paper illustrate an exercise methodology which has proven to be effective in developing the skills required of new inspectors. The first exercise sequence introduces students to the basic methods of nuclear materials accounting. It introduces students to material description coding systems, concepts involved in material balance evaluation, and methods of dealing with a variety of plant record systems. The second exercise sequence provides practice in material verification activities including sample planning, anomaly identification, and simulation of data collection and evaluation.
