Abstract
This paper describes the Nuclear Materials Information System developed and operated by the Nuclear Division of Union Carbide Corporation for the Atomic Energy Commission,, The system is used by the AEC in managing and safeguarding nuclear materials. It processes„ stores, and retrieves information on inven- tories , material balancess and transactions of nuclear materials applicable to domestic licensees and contractors and on materials supplied to foreign countries for peaceful purposes under international agreements. On nuclear materials owned by the AEC, additional information is captured relative to the usage and the administrative, programmatic, and financial management of the materials* The design and operational features of the system are described, including the computer hardware and software components„ The major emphasis is on the data systems and the eventst procedures, and use of data transmission facilities to improve the timeliness characteristics of the data base,, Recent activities in the development of direct input operations between facilities and the central data base are reviewed.
