Abstract
Food irradiation is a proven technology that enhances food safety by eliminating harmful bacteria, extending shelf life, and reducing food waste. Despite its benefits and endorsement by global health organizations, public acceptance in Indonesia remains low due to misconceptions and lack of awareness. This study explores the feasibility of using a web-based educational platform to improve knowledge transfer about food irradiation among the Indonesian population. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining a structured community survey and the development of an interactive web platform. The survey assessed public awareness, knowledge gaps, and attitudes toward food irradiation across different demographic groups, guiding the platform’s design, which included multimedia resources such as videos, infographics, and interactive quizzes to enhance engagement. A pilot test was conducted to evaluate the platform’s effectiveness, revealing a significant improvement in knowledge levels, particularly among older adults, who exhibited the highest increase in awareness. Younger participants demonstrated greater engagement with interactive content, while older users preferred structured textual materials, emphasizing the need for a diversified content approach. These findings highlight the potential of web-based platforms in enhancing public education on nuclear-related topics, including food irradiation. By addressing misinformation and improving accessibility, such platforms can contribute to greater public acceptance of food irradiation technology, ultimately supporting food security and safety initiatives in Indonesia.
