Abstract
The changing global security environment highlights the importance of building a skilled workforce in nuclear security. This study proposes developing a basic nuclear security curriculum as an elective course for high schools. The goal is to introduce students to key concepts in nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, sparking interest in the field and potentially inspiring future professionals. The curriculum combines core principles of nuclear science with international non-proliferation frameworks, combining natural and social sciences to give students a balanced view of the technical and policy aspects of nuclear security. Designed to be accessible and engaging, the course focuses on foundational topics rather than in-depth coverage, making it suitable for high school students. Challenges such as limited resources, teacher training, and curriculum integration are addressed through practical solutions. These include partnerships with educators, governmental institutions, and industry stakeholders to develop affordable materials and provide necessary training. The curriculum is adaptable to various educational systems, ensuring broad applicability. Collaboration with universities, research institutions, and programs like the IAEA, Women in Nuclear Security Initiative (WINSI), and the International Nuclear Security Education Network (INSEN) are emphasized to support resource development and capacity building. Activities like guest lectures, workshops, and simulations are proposed to enhance student engagement and offer real-world insights. Diversity and inclusion are also prioritized, promoting cultural awareness and equitable practices within the curriculum. By introducing nuclear security concepts at the high school level, this initiative aims to raise early awareness and foster long-term interest, contributing to a future workforce equipped to address global security challenges.
