Abstract
The Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) has been charged with the transportation of commercial spent nuclear fuel from the nation's reactor facilities to the Federal repository. This paper focuses on the technical development of the spent fuel and radioactive waste transportation system envisioned and discusses methods and strategies to implement the system. Cask and transporter development under this program will be primarily for shipping spent nuclear fuel from commercial BRR and PWR power plants. OCRWM plans to have its transportation system operational in the nn'd-1 £90's. A summary schedule and estimated cost for the Transportation System Acquisition Task are discussed in addition to the volumes of waste and projected number of shipments.
