Abstract
In the Department of Defense, the subject of physical security is very broad in scope. Its application ranges from counĀ±ering the shoplifters in the post exchange facilities to the sophisticated terrorist who may attempt to obtain access to one of our nuclear weapons. This paper will, however, focus on the area of specific interest to the members of INMM which is the protection of nuclear devices and the classified information associated with them. It is necessary to have an understanding of the DoD concept of security to appreciate the equipment approach being used. We have elected to address our security efforts in terms of: Deterrence, Detection, Denial, Disablement, and Destruction. Therefore, there is heavy reliance on the use of security personnel and electronic devices. Further, the DoD has assigned specific tasks to each of the Military Departments 'to conduct research and development programs aimed at producting specific segments of the total physical security equipment system.
