Abstract

As a result of the UK leaving the European Union, the UK has left the Euratom Treaty, and thus responsibilities for Nuclear Safeguards have fallen to the UK’s regulator – the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). For Sellafield Ltd this has involved a major change to the regulation of our nuclear material accountancy and control, with a new regulator operating a different regime. In order to drive and maintain high standards of nuclear material accountancy and control (NMAC) across the changing landscape, Sellafield Ltd have developed and implemented a NMAC assurance programme. In developing the programme key processes relating to accountancy and control have been identified, and question sets developed for the auditors to assess against. This is enabling numerous improvements to be implemented across the site, ensuring best practice is utilised and that we have confidence in the resilience of our nuclear material accountancy and control arrangements
