Abstract
Defense radioactive waste results from the Department of Energy's (DOE) national defense and research and development activities. These activities include: the operation of production reactors, fuel reprocessing plants and fabrication facilities which support the production of nuclear weapons; and the reprocessing of fuel from naval reactors. This paper describes the types of waste produced by these activities, some of the ongoing actions which assure that the existing waste is stored or disposed of safely, and outlines the planned future activities which will dispose of all DOE waste.
