The unauthorized trans-boundary movement of nuclear and other radioactive materials is becoming a significant concern to international security, and Sub-Saharan Africa is not exempt. This paper examines the security of radioactive sources within the region, identifies existing vulnerabilities, and discusses the role of international cooperation in bolstering radiological security. It further analyzes the effectiveness of national legal and regulatory frameworks in alignment with international standards and provides recommendations for enhancing regional security measures. The paper further examines critically the existing measures implemented by selected countries and the support received from international partners to address these challenges. The study will also highlight gaps in regional radiological security and offer recommendations for enhancement to reduce the risk.
